Adopted a 10 year old beagle last month and want to talk about how wrong I was about senior dogs

I'll be honest. When my friend suggested i look at senior dogs at the shelter, i said "maybe" and meant "definitely not." i wanted the full experience. Puppy energy, watching them grow up, all of that. I went to the shelter to look at a 4 month old lab mix they had listed. The lab had already been adopted. As i was leaving i walked past Henry.

Henry is a 10 year old beagle. He was surrendered when his owner went into assisted living. He'd been in the shelter for 19 days and just sat in the back of his kennel looking deeply unbothered by everything. The staff said he was "very low key." I sat with him for 20 minutes. He put his head in my lap and sighed. i filled out the application before i left the building.

A month in, here's what i was wrong about: I thought a senior dog would be sad, slow, and a reminder of loss. Henry is none of those things. He has opinions. He has a spot on the couch that is his and his alone. He wants his walk at exactly 7:45am and will stand next to his leash giving me significant eye contact until it happens. He has already trained me better than any puppy could have.

The adjustment period that everyone warns you about? We basically didn't have one. He already knew how to live in a house. He already knew sit and stay and down. He slept through the night from day one. I didn't have to puppy-proof anything. He doesn't chew things. he just... exists, peacefully and confidently, like a retired professor who has seen everything and judges nothing.

I know his time is shorter than a puppy's would be. I know that. But right now he's healthy and happy and absolutely running this apartment. If you're on the fence about a senior dog, go meet one. Just go meet one.
