after 18 months of work our husky finally has a recall i would actually call reliable (in fenced areas anyway)

I know the rule with huskies is you never trust them off leash and honestly i still believe it. but we have been working recall with Juno since she was about 8 months old and yesterday at the fenced ballfield she turned away from a SQUIRREL mid chase and came back when i called her. i actually yelled out loud. nobody else was there to see it which feels kind of tragic.

what worked for us was a long line plus stupidly good treats (freeze dried beef lung, she would sell us both for it) and never ever calling her for something she hates. no calling her to leave the park, no calling her for nail trims, nothing. 18 months of that. she still only gets off leash in fully fenced areas and that will never change, but having a real recall even inside a fence feels like a superpower with this breed.
