almost two years in with a samoyed in phoenix az and i want to share what the first summer actually looked like, the coat and heat decisions we got wrong, and what our routine looks like now that finally works
Yuki is 22 months, we got her at 10 weeks from a breeder in oregon and flew her home to phoenix in september so her first six months were "mild" by phoenix standards. then summer hit when she was 9 months and i had no idea what i was doing. writing this for the next person who is thinking about getting a samoyed in a hot climate and the dozen people who have dmed me on instagram asking what we do, because there is not a great resource for this and most of the breed advice online assumes you live somewhere with actual winters.
What we got wrong the first summer. shaving her. i know, i know. i had read the "do not shave" guidance from the breeder and from every reputable source and i did it anyway in june because i was panicking watching her pant on a 108 degree day. our groomer warned me, i pushed her on it, she did a short clip not a full shave but it was still too short. yuki was visibly less comfortable, not more, in the next two weeks because she lost the insulation layer that was actually keeping the heat off her skin. it took 14 months for her coat to grow back correctly and even now there is one patch on her hip that is a different texture. do not do this. the breed coat is doing real work even when it looks counterintuitive in summer. trust the people who know this breed.
What our routine actually looks like now, year two. walks are 530 to 630 am, full stop, no exceptions, even in winter we keep the schedule consistent because she expects it. by 9 am the pavement is unsafe and we do not go outside on it again until after 8 pm. midday enrichment is indoor only, snuffle mats, frozen kongs, puzzle feeders, scent work in the hallway. she has a cooling mat in three rooms and she rotates between them. we run the ac at 73 from may through october which is more expensive than we would otherwise but it is the price of owning this breed here. weekly grooming session is 45 minutes minimum, undercoat rake plus slicker brush, we collect enough fluff to stuff a small pillow each session. without that routine the undercoat traps heat and the coat actually does become a problem. with it she is more comfortable than i would have predicted.
Things i wish someone had told me before we got her. the grooming budget is real, we spend about 90 a month on professional grooming every 6 weeks plus tools at home. the indoor enrichment is not optional, a samoyed who cannot work her brain because it is too hot to walk will dismantle your house, ask me about the kitchen baseboards. the vet bills can be higher in a hot climate because heat related issues are real if you slip on the routine even once. and the social piece, sammies want to be with their people constantly so the days you are home in the ac with her are her favorite days, she is not a dog who entertains herself well. would i do it again, honestly yes, she is the right dog for our family, but i would not casually recommend this breed in this climate to someone who is not ready to build their life around her needs. happy to answer specific questions if anyone is researching
