Bringing a puppy into a house with a senior dog - advice?

Our old boy is 11 and slowing down. We want to get a puppy but worried about how it'll affect him. He tolerates other dogs but doesnt love them.

People tell me a puppy will "give him energy" but that sounds like wishful thinking. Anyone actually done this successfully? How did the senior handle it?
