flew with my 19 lb dog cross country last weekend, here is everything that actually mattered and everything that didnt

Writing this up while it is fresh because i spent honestly probably 30 hours of research before this flight and most of the internet advice was either out of date, way too anxious, or scammy. We flew Newark to Portland with a layover in Denver, 19 lb terrier mix in cabin, on a regular ticket. Not service dog, not ESA. Here is the actual list of what mattered.

What mattered. One, the carrier. I bought 3 different carriers and returned 2. The one that worked was the Sleepypod Air because it actually fit under the seats on all three plane types we encountered without me having to gorilla shove it. The other carriers fit on paper and not in real life. Two, the bathroom situation. Get to the airport early enough to use the pet relief area before security and again at every layover. Denver has an indoor one past security, Newark and Portland make you exit and re-clear. Plan for the re-clear. Three, water but not food the morning of. We did half a normal breakfast 4 hours before and no food at the airport. Zero accidents, zero throwing up.

What did not matter as much as the internet said. Sedation, we did not, vets we talked to said no for healthy small dogs in cabin and they were right. The whole "tire her out before the flight" thing did basically nothing for our anxious dog, the carrier itself was the regulator, not the exercise. Buying a special cooling pad, did not need. The 47 different "calming sprays," gimmick.

What i wish i had known. The TSA part is the most stressful part of the whole day. You take the dog out of the carrier, walk through the metal detector holding her, and someone hand inspects the carrier. Practice carrying your dog through a doorway calmly because if you are tense she is going to wiggle and stress out. Also: every single gate agent at every single airport had a different opinion about whether i could pre-board with a pet, and i learned to just confidently ask "i have a small dog in carrier, can i pre-board" and 2 of 3 said yes. The third was polite but no.

Happy to answer questions if anyone has a flight coming up. The whole thing was 1000% less terrible than i had built it up to be in my head.
