Hiking 14ers with my dog - lessons learned
Took my 3 year old aussie on her first 14er last weekend (Mt. Bierstadt in Colorado). Some lessons from the experience:
1. Bring way more water than you think you need. She drank almost 2 liters.
2. Dog booties are essential on the rocky sections. She cut her pad on the first attempt without them.
3. Start EARLY. We left the trailhead at 5am and she was struggling with the heat by 10.
4. Take more breaks than you normally would. Dogs wont tell you when theyre exhausted until its too late.
5. Not all dogs can handle altitude. Watch for excessive panting, stumbling, confusion.
She loved it overall and slept for like 16 hours straight when we got home. Already planning the next one.
