Dog BreedingPosted by lab_double_ccl_journey

how do you actually vet a dog breeder beyond the nice website, we lost a 500 dollar deposit to a scam in march, the standard poodle breeders weve found since range from 1200 to 4500 dollars and all use words like champion bloodlines and vet checked that apparently mean nothing, so what paperwork do i demand, how do i verify it instead of taking their word, and is a two year waitlist a quality signal or just gatekeeping

after a year of research we landed on a standard poodle, my daughter has mild allergies and after three visits with a friends standard who is basically a philosophy professor in a dog suit, the whole family is in. i thought finding the dog would be the easy part. in march we found a "breeder" with a gorgeous website, available puppies, health guarantee badge, the works. $500 deposit by zelle to hold a black male. the next week the site was gone, the number disconnected, and the photos, i later discovered, belonged to a breeder in another state who has a warning about the scam on her own homepage.

so now im gun shy and neck deep in tabs. the current field. a $1,200 farm listing an hour away, both parents on site, "vet checked, healthy bloodlines." a $2,800 breeder with "champion bloodlines" and a nice facebook page. and a $4,500 breeder with a two year waitlist and an application longer than our mortgage paperwork, who wants to know everything from our fence height to our work schedules and has a clause that the dog comes back to her if we ever cant keep him, at any age, no exceptions.

the vocabulary is where i keep getting lost. AKC registered seems to mean almost nothing, the scam site claimed it too. "vet checked" sounds identical to "health tested" to a normal person and im gathering it is not. and i cant tell if the $4,500 interrogation lady is the gold standard or if ive just found dog world gatekeeping with a waitlist.

so, people who live in this world. 1. what specific health testing should exist for standard poodle parents, and how do i VERIFY it rather than admiring a certificate jpeg someone texts me. 2. is the two year waitlist and novel length application actually correlated with better dogs or is it culture. 3. the contract stuff, mandatory return to breeder, limited registration, fence approval, normal or controlling. 4. how do deposits work with legitimate breeders, because i am never sending zelle to a stranger again and i need to know what the real version looks like
