My golden keeps stealing socks - is this a breed thing or just my weirdo?

Okay so our 2-year-old golden Biscuit has been pulling socks out of the laundry basket for about a year now. He doesn't chew them or destroy them - just carries one around the house like a little trophy whenever guests come over. It's kind of hilarious but also kind of embarrassing when he greets visitors with a dirty sock in his mouth.

My sister has a lab and says hers does the same thing. My neighbor's golden is the same. So is this just a retriever thing or did we accidentally train this somehow? He definitely gets more attention when he does it (because it's impossible not to laugh), which probably isn't helping.

Has anyone had luck breaking this habit? Or do we just accept that Biscuit is a sock sommelier for life?
