My rescue pit bull completely transformed after 6 months - here's what actually worked

When we adopted Biscuit from the shelter last October, the staff warned us he had "a few behavioral quirks." That was definitely an understatement. The dog shook constantly, barked at literally everything, and would not eat unless we left the room. I genuinely cried the first week wondering if we'd made a mistake.

Six months later this dog sleeps on my feet every night and greets my kids at the door. So here's what actually made the difference, because i read a LOT of advice online that just didn't apply to a fearful rescue.

First thing: we stopped pushing him to do anything. No forced affection, no dragging him to meet new people, no "he just needs to get used to it." We let him approach everything on his terms and it took about 3 weeks before he even wanted to be in the same room as us without a reason.

Second: frozen kongs and lick mats became our best friends. Kept him occupied during stressful moments (vacuuming, visitors, whatever) and helped him build positive associations with stuff that scared him. The transformation honestly happened slower than i expected but it stuck. Anyone else have a fearful rescue success story? Would love to hear what worked for you.
