One year update on my fearful rescue - the transformation is real
Posted here about a year ago when i adopted a border collie mix from a rural shelter. She was so shut down when i got her she wouldnt move, eat, or make eye contact. The rescue called her "a project dog" which honestly scared me but i said yes anyway.
For the first 3 months she mostly hid under the bed. I sat on the floor near her for hours every day just reading or watching tv. Didnt try to pet her or force anything. Tossed treats near her without looking at her. It felt like nothing was working.
Then one morning she came out and put her head on my knee. I literally cried. And now a year later she sleeps in my bed, does zoomies in the backyard, and learned to play fetch. She still gets nervous around strangers but shes unrecognizable compared to that first week.
If you're considering a fearful rescue, please do it. The patience is worth it a thousand times over.
