Border ColliePosted by retiredtech_lori

our ten week old border collie pup picked up her name and a basic place command in under two weeks which is way ahead of what we expected and now im trying to figure out what to teach next without burning her out

Sage came home at 8 weeks from a working sheepdog line breeder in oregon, both parents are actively trialing dogs, were her family's first non working home placement. we went in expecting a clever puppy and a steep workload but we were not expecting her to lock onto her name within 4 days or to be holding a place command on her bed for 90 seconds at 10 weeks. our trainer (border collie person, 20 years of trials experience) watched a video i sent her this morning and her response was basically "yeah that tracks, what are you going to do with her."

which is the question i dont have an answer to. our original plan was the standard 16 week puppy protocol, name + recall + sit + down + place + leash walking + crate + socialization, then start basics at 4 months. on the current pace shes going to be done with that list by week 12 and im not sure if pushing further is the right move or if the right move is to slow down and let the calm-and-settle skills bake in before stacking new cues. i dont want to be the person who makes a working-line BC neurotic at 4 months because i kept feeding her brain new puzzles every day.

questions for the working line BC families. one, did you stick to the standard puppy curriculum even when the dog was running ahead of it, or did you let the dog set the pace. two, what does "calm settle" training actually look like for a puppy whose default is "what next." three, when did you introduce the first sport or activity foundation (we are leaning agility or maybe scent work, not herding for our living situation) and what was the first piece you taught. happy to take pushback on the premise, im aware "my puppy is so smart" posts age poorly. just want to do right by her brain.
