Sharing what actually helped my 13 year old lab's arthritis
my lab Charlie turned 13 in January and has had arthritis in his hips for about two years now. i want to share what's actually made a real difference because when we first got the diagnosis i felt completely lost and a lot of what i found online was either vague or trying to sell something. this is just what worked for us.
the biggest single change was getting him off the floor for sleeping. we'd had a regular dog bed his whole life but switched to a proper orthopedic foam bed and i noticed within about two weeks that he was getting up easier in the mornings. that stiff, old-man-struggling-to-stand thing he was doing was noticeably better. it cost $90 and i regret not doing it years earlier.
second was the car ramp. Charlie always loved car rides but had started hesitating before jumping in, which crushed me because you could tell he wanted to go but the jump hurt. got a ramp off Amazon for $55 and it took maybe 3 days to teach him how to use it. now he trots right up, no hesitation.
on the medication side, our vet put him on Galliprant which is an NSAID that's gentler on kidneys than the older options. we do bloodwork every 6 months to check his kidney values since he's on it long term. his mobility on good days is genuinely impressive for his age.
things that helped somewhat: fish oil every day, short walks 2-3 times daily instead of one long one, keeping him at a healthy weight (we actually got him down 4 lbs which our vet said makes a meaningful difference on the joints). things that didnt do much for us specifically: the joint supplements with glucosamine. tried them for 6 months and honestly couldnt tell a difference. might work for other dogs.
he's still very much Charlie - still excited about food, still wants to be where the family is, still gives the best eye contact. just slower and needier about where he sleeps. i'll take it.
