Six months in - our rescue finally showed us who she really is
we adopted Nora in October from a local rescue. she came from a hoarding situation - they pulled something like 40 dogs from one property. when she arrived at our house she went straight under the bed and stayed there for three days. would come out to eat only if we weren't looking. wouldn't let us touch her. i cried twice thinking we'd brought home a dog who was just going to be terrified forever.
month one: would eat in the same room as us. month two: started sleeping on the dog bed instead of under the bed. month three: first time she let my husband pet her head. he just sat on the floor for like 20 minutes until she walked over and sniffed his hand and allowed one pat. we both acted completely casual even though internally we were losing our minds.
month four: started coming to us for attention. still skittish at sounds but we could see her trying. month five: zoomies in the backyard for the first time. i didn't know she was even capable of the zoomies. she became a totally different dog outside - zooming around, picking up sticks, showing off.
now at six months: sleeps on the couch with us. greets us at the door. follows me room to room. has a best friend (our neighbor's beagle). barks at squirrels with genuine enthusiasm. is a completely normal happy dog.
if you adopted a scared rescue and feel like it's not working - please be patient. they're not broken. they just need time to learn that this is real and it's safe and you're not going anywhere. Nora knew the whole time. she just needed to be sure.
