Six months in with my rescue and she's completely changed my life
I adopted Luna from our county shelter last October when she was about 2 years old. The shelter didn't know much about her history - she was picked up as a stray. She was sweet but really shut down in the kennel, just lying in the back of her run not making eye contact with anyone.
The first two months were hard. She was terrified of so many things - ceiling fans, the dishwasher, men with hats. She had pretty bad leash reactivity and i was embarrassed to walk her for a while honestly. There were a few moments where i genuinely wondered if i was the right home for her.
But somewhere around month 4 or 5 something shifted. She started initiating play. She started greeting me at the door with a toy. Last week she rolled over and demanded belly rubs from my dad, who she used to hide from. i cried a little bit ngl.
If you're in the trenches with a scared rescue right now - just stay the course. The decompression period is so real and it's worth every hard moment.
