Thought my dog ate something toxic - scariest 2 hours of my life
Yesterday afternoon my 4 year old beagle mix Pretzel got into my bag while i was working and i came back to find the zipper open and a half-eaten pack of sugar-free gum on the floor. Xylitol gum. For anyone who doesnt know, xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs - like can cause liver failure toxic.
I completely panicked. Called my vet, they were closed, called the emergency vet and got on the road while my partner called the ASPCA animal poison control hotline (888-426-4435 - saving this number in EVERYONE'S phones now). They told us to come in immediately and monitored her for 2 hours with blood glucose checks.
She's completely fine, thank god. Turns out she probably only chewed one piece and spit most of it out. But those 2 hours were absolutely terrifying. Please please please keep xylitol products locked away - it's in so much stuff now (gum, peanut butter, some baked goods). Didnt mean to be preachy but this scared me half to death and i just want other people to not go through it.
