vet quoted 1140 dollars for our 5 year old goldens first dental and the pre dental consult was another 240, please tell me whether this is real prices or whether im being upsold
Penny is 5, golden retriever, been with us since she was 9 weeks old, no major health issues other than the standard golden ear infections every spring. She went in for her annual last tuesday and the vet flipped her lip up and said "her teeth are about a 2.5 out of 4, shes due for a cleaning, lets schedule." I said sure and then they handed me a printed estimate that made my stomach drop.
The breakdown: pre-anesthetic bloodwork 165, IV catheter and fluids 220, anesthesia and monitoring 340, the actual cleaning and polishing 280, possible extractions 50-200 each (estimate showed two likely), antibiotics to send home 45, and a 240 dental consult fee that has to be done before the cleaning is even scheduled. Total range with two extractions: roughly 1380 to 1680. The 1140 number is best case if she somehow needs no extractions, which the vet already said is unlikely.
I am not anti spending money on Penny. We pay for her good food, we pay for the bloodwork, we pay for the once a year stuff. But the dental consult fee is what is throwing me. I have never had a vet require a separate paid consult before scheduling a procedure. Is this normal now. Also is 1100-1600 for a basic dental cleaning the actual going rate or are we in expensive vet territory. We are in a high cost of living area (denver suburbs) so im not expecting cheap, but i want to know if i should call around.
And the broader question, is anesthesia free dental cleaning a real thing or is that scam territory. Our groomer mentioned it and i dismissed it but now im wondering if i should look into it. Tell me what you would do if this was your dog please, i feel like im making this decision in a vacuum.
